Demonstration is planned as protesters target church
PROTESTERS from across the country will descend upon East Grinstead tomorrow (Friday) to demonstrate against Scientology.
The demonstration, which has been described on one internet forum as a "mega raid", has been planned by the group Ex-Scientologists UK and coincides with the International Association of Scientologists' anniversary weekend at its UK base at Saint Hill Manor.
Up to 8,000 Scientologists are expected to attend the annual Saint Hill gala, which will highlight the organisation's humanitarian work over the last year – but, as guests arrive, protestors hope to spread their anti-Scientology message.
Former Scientologist Martin Padfield was based at the Saint Hill headquarters from 1989 to 1993 and plans to attend the protest to add his voice to opposition anger.
"When I started researching the situation within the church with the blinkers off, and after reading other people's stories, I decided to leave once and for all.
"I am not one for standing around on the sidelines," he said.
A media frenzy surrounded the church earlier this year following the divorce of high-profile member Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes, which led to a string of ex-members speaking out in the national media, criticising Scientology.
The demonstration is set to start in East Grinstead High Street at noon tomorrow, with protestors walking to Saint Hill for 3pm.
But the church's public affairs director, Graeme Wilson, said the church was not hugely concerned about it.
"The argument is years old but whoever does turn up is entitled to their freedom of expression," he said.
"The group is made up of people with axes to grind. You could raise the point about opposition with any other religion or organisation; there will always be people for and people against.
"There are people doing fantastic things in our world who get attacked.
"We are very much part of the community and contribute to local businesses.
"With all religions and religious organisations throughout history, there are always bigots and people who want to create religious hatred and intolerance. Name-calling is their usual weapon.
"Any political or religious group always faces opposition, that is human nature, and there are always members of religions who turn against it."

I see that young boy there and I think how very, very sad. Because here is what this young lad, now a grown man believes: http://rediscoverscientology.com/martin-padfield.html
I am extremely concerned by this line:
Until such time as The Church becomes what LRH intended I am henceforth an Independent Scientologist.

I would suggest Martin, that you become 'Independent' and not dependent on LRH and Scientology.

On a short break from work and have managed to watch a bit of the live stream from East. Grinstead. Caught John McGhee speaking and there is a man that talks sense.Too many people seem to think there is substance in L. Ron Hubbard's scientology but not David Miscavige's. Utter poppycock! Scientology is L. Ron Hubbard, always was, always will be no matter who practices it.Whom ever Silver Solo is on livestream chat, has it right and the biggest reason I regret I could not be there. What about Hubbard's abuses of which there were many? Locking children up in the chain lockers, overboarding,SP declares, disconnection,Sec Checks, forced abortions, locking adults up that suddenly disagreed with Hubbard in Hubbard's terms called a psychotic break. In plain English called induced mental breakdowns due to the afore mentioned abuses. And Vicky, whom ever she was, says she was one of the first to be declared and thrown out, what rubbish, hundreds of people were declared and thrown out long before Vicky.
Not just declared, but previous to that, locked up, sec checked, committed to harsh labour. When are these people going to stop lying? Especially to themselves.
